It took a lot of back and forth during the design process. And there were a few times we felt we should just stop and not actually move forward with the remodel. Between $$ issues and trying to meet our minimum requirements we were not at all certain that things would come together. Dealing with our goal of redoing the original attic stairs that go up to a bedroom to make them ‘real’ stairs and too code was one of our main budget busters. Add to it a lot of unseen things like HVAC, Electrical, and insulation and our budget quickly shrank. But we finally found a design that would work for us. Yes, we’ve had to compromise in a number of areas and not do some things. But we have something that we feel will look great and still give us most of what we wanted.

We are still getting; new stairs, master suite, slightly larger and totally new kitchen. Which will give us a three bedroom, three bath house, with a huge dining room, living room and a parlor/fire-place room.

Things that got cut were mostly changes to the upstairs bedroom/bath we wanted done. But those are things we can come back to another time. Although, because we are doing the master downstairs as an addition it means no brick on that part of the house. That is probably one of my biggest worries at this point is how the addition will actually look from our high-profile position on Freedom Park. But Bob and Dan plan on using the old brick around the foundation to tie the new and old portions together. So it sounds like it will work at least in theory.

All in all we are pleased with the design process and working with Portico. Bob and Dan have been accommodating and worked hard to meet our needs and budget. And other than things have dragged on for longer than we anticipated due to their current/previous projects we have no complaints.
